Commonly called the ‘daddy long legs,” this is called the Harvestman, a group of creatures belonging to the Arachnid class. Although they resemble much like a spider, they are actually not for two reasons. They do not spin webs (they have no spinnerets) and they do not carry venom. Though they cannot bite, they release a chemical secretion that is considered distasteful to a lot of predators. Their second legs are the longest because they are actually antennas used to detect vibrations in the ground of oncoming predators. Harvestmen are commonly found in the woods and sometimes appear in people’s home, but are not considered dangerous. The actual spider that is considered correctly a ‘daddy long legs” spider is the long bodied cellar spider, known to vibrate its web violently to make it difficult for predators to detect. They are known to also have a slim abdomen and long slender legs. Photos available at https://stevenanthony123456.smugmug.com/Animals/

What a cutie he is!
Daddy Long Legs loves our home. When I approach, sometimes, they will vibrate, as you say, quite violently… Poor little things; they really must believe this threatens me as they watch me walk away! It worked! 😉

When I was three and four, I used to see those all the time and they scared the hooey out of me. When my parents finally convinced me that they were harmless, I began playing with them. 🙂

I never got scared of them to be quite frank. It was always the long bodied cellar spiders that scared me usually. Of course I have seen them many times and they do not want to be bothered by me.

I hear you there! Most spiders are more scared of us than we are of them! 😂🤣😂🤣

Exactly and the other cool part is they get rid of pests to an extent such as mosquitoes and roaches.

They sure do! Luckily I’ve since learned to identify the poisonous spiders. The wolf spider looms scary but they eat the poisonous spiders!

I guess it depends on the species of them as well. They have one of the best eye sights apparently
