The Infamous Skunk Cabbage!

It is extremely dangerous to touch or even eat any plant unless you know exactly what you are doing..  Fortunately, I will tell you this plant is dangerous.  Since I got into foraging with Wildman Steve Brill,  this is a plant to steer clear of because just taking a piece of it into your mouth will feel like ten thousand scorpion stings all at once.  If you happen to swallow the plant in large quantities, breathing difficultly, convulsions, coma, and possible death will occur.  The reason for this because the plant contains microscopic crystal oxalates.  If you survive eating the plant it is possible you may suffer kidney and liver damage.  If you even break the plant up to take a good smell at it, you may want to reconsider throwing it away rather than eating it since it has the smell of a skunk.  The best you can do with this plant or any poisonous plant is respect from a distance to not be in a harmful situation.  Skunk cabbage can be found in wooded areas where pools of water can form after a rain storm.

It’s amazing the lengths that plants go to to protect them selves. The amount of energy and resources that goes into it’s self preservation is often more than we realize.

Some thorn trees in Africa protect themselves from overgrazing by Giraffe’s, by releasing cyanide. Others form bulbous growths at the root of their thorns, luring ant’s to make nest in them on purpose so when they are grazed upon, the ant’s attack them to protect their own nest.

Very interesting and informative, thanks for sharing!
