Welcome Lesser Celandine

This is a beautiful flower that I found in the front yard of where I live in NY.  Celandine actually belongs to the Buttercup family, which is known to contain a poison called Protoanemonin.  Found in all species of Buttercup, it can cause symptoms ranging from nausea to spasms and dizziness.  However, leaves of the Lesser Celandine can be eaten before the flowers appear in early spring.  Boiling the leaves and cooking them with some other delicious wild edibles such as Field Garlic and Garlic Mustard make a great concoction of true wild foods.  Do not eat any wild plant unless you know exactly what you are doing.  This includes going on tours with local foragers and reading about wild plants from individuals who have focused almost their entire lives on botany and how you can identify poisonous plants from edible ones.  The key is to use sense of sight and smell.  Observing poisonous plants from a distance is the only way to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of  plants that have a history of causing sickness in people and possible death.
