Tree Photography

If there is one type of photography I can greatly improve on it has to be tree photo shooting.  This can be tricky for even an experienced as he or she must tell the observer this is the tree that is the main subject.  Your main subject tells the reader a story with the usage of clarity and beauty.  Yet, your main subject can fall out of bounds and become less focused with many other trees becoming the main source instead.  Photography is not meant to be a perfect field of artistry, but you want to be as close to perfection as possible with choosing which tree you want the observer to focus in on.  One of the ways to get around it is to make sure you angle your shot correctly before shooting.  This means surveying the land and trying to figure out which tree you want to be the main subject.  During post-production, you can also use Photoshop to edit out the trees that might be a distraction.  You also want to make sure that you use a good f-stop, ISO and aperture to ensure you reduce noise and blue, and balance of light.  Of course you can always use Photoshop and Lightroom to make the lighting 10 times better in the image.  Here are some of the tree photos that are on my site for purchase at  You can find them in the tree category that I created.

The Infamous Skunk Cabbage!

It is extremely dangerous to touch or even eat any plant unless you know exactly what you are doing..  Fortunately, I will tell you this plant is dangerous.  Since I got into foraging with Wildman Steve Brill,  this is a plant to steer clear of because just taking a piece of it into your mouth will feel like ten thousand scorpion stings all at once.  If you happen to swallow the plant in large quantities, breathing difficultly, convulsions, coma, and possible death will occur.  The reason for this because the plant contains microscopic crystal oxalates.  If you survive eating the plant it is possible you may suffer kidney and liver damage.  If you even break the plant up to take a good smell at it, you may want to reconsider throwing it away rather than eating it since it has the smell of a skunk.  The best you can do with this plant or any poisonous plant is respect from a distance to not be in a harmful situation.  Skunk cabbage can be found in wooded areas where pools of water can form after a rain storm.

Welcome Lesser Celandine

This is a beautiful flower that I found in the front yard of where I live in NY.  Celandine actually belongs to the Buttercup family, which is known to contain a poison called Protoanemonin.  Found in all species of Buttercup, it can cause symptoms ranging from nausea to spasms and dizziness.  However, leaves of the Lesser Celandine can be eaten before the flowers appear in early spring.  Boiling the leaves and cooking them with some other delicious wild edibles such as Field Garlic and Garlic Mustard make a great concoction of true wild foods.  Do not eat any wild plant unless you know exactly what you are doing.  This includes going on tours with local foragers and reading about wild plants from individuals who have focused almost their entire lives on botany and how you can identify poisonous plants from edible ones.  The key is to use sense of sight and smell.  Observing poisonous plants from a distance is the only way to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of  plants that have a history of causing sickness in people and possible death.
